Ingredients

Scale
  • For the cupcakes:

    • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup whole milk
    • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • For the frosting:

    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 23 tbsp heavy cream
    • Red or pink food coloring (optional)
    • Valentine’s Day sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 12-cup muffin tin with paper cupcake liners.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In alternating batches, add the dry ingredients and the milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  • Add the sour cream and gently fold it into the batter until smooth.
  • Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about 2/3 full.
  • Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean. Allow to cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • For the frosting: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.
  • Add vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream, and beat until the frosting reaches a smooth and spreadable consistency. Add more cream if necessary.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring if you want the frosting to be pink or red. Mix until fully incorporated.
  • Frost the cooled cupcakes with a generous swirl of frosting. Top with Valentine’s Day sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations.
  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • These cupcakes can be made a day in advance. Store them in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • For a richer flavor, you can use buttermilk instead of whole milk.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of food coloring to your preference for a more vibrant pink or red hue.
