Ingredients
Scale
- For the Dough:
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- For the Cinnamon Filling:
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- For the Glaze:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until foamy. Stir in the melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Prepare the Cinnamon Filling: While the dough is rising, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Roll Out the Dough: After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 12×18 inches on a floured surface. Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough, then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar mixture on top.
- Shape the Rolls: Starting from the long edge of the rectangle, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Slice the log into 12 even pieces. To make heart shapes, take each slice and gently form it into a heart by shaping the sides of the roll inward to create the top of the heart.
- Bake the Rolls: Arrange the heart-shaped rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, leaving a little space between them. Cover with a towel and let them rise for about 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Prepare the Glaze: While the rolls are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl. Add more milk if necessary to achieve a smooth, pourable consistency.
- Glaze and Serve: Once the cinnamon rolls are baked and slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze over the top. Serve warm and enjoy the sweet, heart-shaped treat!
Notes
- You can use store-bought dough if you’re short on time, but homemade dough yields the best results for soft, fluffy rolls.
- To make these rolls even more festive, top them with sprinkles or heart-shaped decorations after glazing.
- For a richer glaze, add a tablespoon of cream cheese to the glaze mixture.
