Description

Indulge in the savory, creamy goodness of Classic Shrimp and Grits, a beloved Southern dish! Juicy shrimp are perfectly seasoned and served over a bed of velvety, cheesy grits. This comfort food classic is full of flavor and easy enough for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Shrimp:

  • 1 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

For the Grits:

  • 1 cup stone-ground grits
  • 4 cups water or chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Grits:

    • In a medium saucepan, bring water or chicken broth to a boil. Gradually whisk in the grits and reduce heat to low.
    • Cook the grits for about 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until they are thick and creamy.
    • Stir in butter, heavy cream, and cheese. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm.
  • Cook the Shrimp:

    • Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
    • Add the shrimp to the skillet and season with smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Cook the shrimp for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they turn pink and opaque.
    • Stir in the lemon juice and remove the skillet from the heat.
  • Assemble the Dish:

    • Spoon the creamy grits into serving bowls.
    • Top with the cooked shrimp and spoon any remaining pan sauce over the top.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the water or broth with milk when making the grits.
  • You can also add a few dashes of hot sauce to the shrimp for an extra kick.
  • This dish can be served as an elegant dinner or as part of a Southern-inspired feast.
