Description

Classic Chicken Cordon Bleu is a delicious and crispy dish featuring tender chicken breasts stuffed with savory ham and Swiss cheese. Perfect for a comforting dinner, this dish is both indulgent and impressive when served with a rich sauce. Crispy on the outside, gooey and melty on the inside, it’s a meal the whole family will love.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Chicken Cordon Bleu:

    • ½ cup all-purpose flour

    • ½ cup milk

    • 1 large egg

    • 1 cup breadcrumbs

    • 2 large chicken breasts

    • 4 slices of ham or prosciutto

    • 6 slices of Swiss cheese or Gruyère (cut in half)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    • Oil for frying

  • For the Optional Sauce:

    • 1 heaping tablespoon all-purpose flour

    • 1 ½ cups chicken stock

    • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Flatten the chicken breasts using a meat mallet or rolling pin to an even thickness.

  • Season the chicken with salt and pepper, then place 2 slices of ham and 3 slices of cheese (folded in half) on each breast.

  • Roll up the chicken breasts tightly, securing the ends with toothpicks.

  • Prepare three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with a beaten egg and milk mixture, and one with breadcrumbs.

  • Dip each chicken roll in the flour, then the egg mixture, and finally coat it with breadcrumbs.

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the chicken rolls on all sides until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side.

  • Transfer the chicken to a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F or 74°C).

  • For the sauce (optional), melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute.

  • Gradually whisk in the chicken stock and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Remove toothpicks from the chicken rolls and serve with the sauce drizzled on top.

Notes

  • You can substitute the Swiss cheese with Gruyère for a stronger flavor.

  • For a lighter version, you can bake the chicken instead of frying it.

  • Make sure the chicken is fully cooked by checking the internal temperature.
