Description

A delicious, simple breakfast recipe combining melted cheese and a perfectly cooked egg on crispy toast. You can add fresh herbs or spice it up with optional cayenne for an extra kick. Ideal for a quick morning meal or a comforting snack.


Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup (2 oz) grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere)
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Lightly toast the bread or broil for 1 to 2 minutes on each side.
  2. Preheat the oven to 400°F. If using a toaster oven, adjust the cooking rack to the bottom and select the “BAKE” setting.
  3. Crack the egg into a small bowl and beat with a fork until the yolk and white are fully combined.
  4. Mix in the cheese and fresh herbs, if using. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Spread the egg and cheese mixture over the bread, covering it all the way to the crusts. Sprinkle with cayenne if desired.
  6. Bake for about 10 to 12 minutes until the egg and cheese mixture is puffed, bubbly, and starting to brown.

Air Fryer Directions:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 340°F.
  2. Prepare the egg mixture and spread it over the untoasted bread slices.
  3. Carefully place the slices in the heated air fryer basket.
  4. Air fry at 340°F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until browned, toasted, and cooked through.

Cheese Toast Variations:

  • Faux Monsieur: Use Gruyere cheese. Spread toasted bread with Dijon mustard, add veggie slices, and bake as directed.
  • Tomato Toast: Use mozzarella and parmesan cheeses with Italian seasoning. Bake and layer with tomato slices, oregano, salt, and pepper. Drizzle with balsamic glaze.
  • Honey Apple Walnut: Bake cheesy toast as directed. Top with crisp apple slices, honey, and toasted cinnamon walnuts.
