Description

Learn how to make your own beginner-friendly sourdough bread! This simple recipe uses an active sourdough starter to create a beautifully tangy, flavorful, and crusty loaf from scratch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 475 grams all-purpose flour (3 1/2 cups)
  • 100 grams active and bubbly sourdough starter (1/2 cup)
  • 325 grams water (1 1/3 cups)
  • 10 grams salt (2 teaspoons)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt.
  • Add the sourdough starter and water to the dry ingredients. Stir until it forms a sticky dough.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough back in the bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for 1-2 hours or until it has doubled in size.
  • Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release air bubbles.
  • Shape the dough into a round or oval loaf and place it into a well-floured proofing basket or bowl.
  • Cover the dough and let it rise for another 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size again.
  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and place a Dutch oven inside to heat up.
  • Once the dough is ready, carefully transfer it to the preheated Dutch oven.
  • Bake with the lid on for 25 minutes, then remove the lid and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  • Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Make sure your sourdough starter is bubbly and active before using it in this recipe.
  • If you don’t have a Dutch oven, you can bake the bread on a baking sheet, but the crust may not be as crispy.
  • You can adjust the hydration (water-to-flour ratio) depending on the flour you use.
